Safer than ever! The all-new Isuzu D-Max Pick-up truck combines smart new styling and impressive safety technology with improved off-road performance. In addition, the 1-tonne utility vehicle has been awarded a maximum 5-Star safety rating from the latest, more stringent Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) test.
Not only does the MY2021 D-Max deliver the strength and durability expected from an Isuzu Pick-up, this capable workhorse now adds superior levels of comfort and refinement.
Benefitting from a bold exterior design, the All-New D-Max boasts a more distinguishable and powerful appearance. The elevated front-end design and sharp contours generate a more imposing presence. Some have affectionately called it as an “Angry-Bird” lookalike!
The interior has been transformed too with an enhanced dashboard design and new infotainment systems which provide a more spacious and higher quality feel. This is accompanied by soft-touch panelling and fine detailing that contributes to a more premium interior yet it’s fuss-free and all switch gear practical to operate.
On the road during the inaugural test drives, the new front and rear suspension was found to deliver greater refinement without compromising the D-Max’s admirable load-carrying capabilities, and this is complemented by improved road and noise sound-proofing and a new speed-sensitive electronic power steering which improves manoeuvrability and accuracy.
As we all know Isuzu is famed for its 4×4 expertise and this D-Max is even more capable off-road with a faster engaging shift-on-the-fly 4WD system and a standard rear diff-lock on All-Purpose and Adventure models. Another important development in that the already durable ladder chassis has been further strengthened thanks to larger rails and an extra panel has been added to provide more extensive underbody protection.
Back on the road, it’s even safer thanks to a comprehensive ADAS package that includes Autonomous Emergency Braking, Traffic Sign Recognition, Intelligent Speed Limiter and Lane Departure Warning & Prevention on select models.
“Notably, as mentioned the next generation D-Max has taken a huge stride forward in terms of refinement, safety and comfort while retaining its core characteristics of strength, durability and capability.”
The drivetrain is now meeting Euro 6D compliant diesel engine emissions standards delivering 164PS and 360Nm of torque and is mated to a choice of either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic, which offers up to 25% faster gear changes. As this unit is a carry over from the outgoing version, this 1.9-litre diesel is somewhat below par compared to the opposition in terms of horsepower and torque but wins on fuel economy and lower carbon emissions.
Remaining true to its workhorse pedigree, this D-Max is capable of towing up to 3.5tonnes and carrying over a tonne payload, as before. Customers are presented with a wide range of models to choose from including 4×2 or 4×4, three different cab types (single, extended and double cab) and new trim levels.
By introducing the wide range of ADAS features, new airbags, larger brakes and by making alterations to the chassis, the All-New Isuzu D-Max is the first Pick-up truck to achieve all five stars.
There is also a new E-Call system which dials the emergency services in the event of an accident. This is a mandatory requirement for the Euro NCAP 5-star rating as it automatically activates when the airbags are deployed. In the event of a less serious collision or to report an emergency incident, the driver can simply press the E-Call button on the overhead console.
At the physical operational end, the extra cross-member added to the durable ladder chassis which has been strengthened even further with certain sections up to 34% wider and 14% higher to increase rigidity and improve passenger safety, particularly during side impacts.
A revised suspension design increases stability and road holding while larger brakes have been fitted at the front and rear to reduce stopping distances, increase the service life and reduce brake fade.
The conditions for a 5-star rating on the latest Euro NCAP test are significantly higher than in previous years, with heavier and faster trolleys used in the collisions and the mandatory requirement of additional safety features.
