Screwfix is continuing its mission to uncover the very best trade apprentices across Ireland and the UK, by officially launching its much-coveted Screwfix Trade Apprentice 2024 competition. Celebrating the fourth year of Screwfix Trade Apprentice in Ireland, this year’s champion will receive the title, and a career-boosting trade bundle worth €10,000, including €5,000 of tools, a €3,000 training budget, and €2,000 worth of technology.

According to National Apprenticeship Office, the State agency tasked with building Ireland’s Further Education and Training sector, 2023 saw a positive increase of 34% (9014 versus 6177 in 2019) in young people enrolling in trade apprenticeships in Ireland, reflecting the demand for highly-skilled workers in this area. These ‘earn and learn’ opportunities are vital to the economy as  the national apprenticeship system evolves into  a skills development route that is attractive, accessible, and responsive to the needs of apprentices and employers.

Recognising the need to support the new generation of skilled workforce in the Irish market, Screwfix introduced the “Screwfix Trade Apprentice” competition. This initiative not only acknowledges the growing demand for skilled workers but also champions the benefits of a career in the trade.

Electrician, DJ Earley, from Monasterevin in County Kildare who reached the Screwfix Trade Apprentice final in 2023 expressed; “Participating in the Screwfix competition was an incredible journey. Meeting individuals from across the country who share similar passions and interests was a fantastic experience. This competition provides an excellent opportunity for young tradespeople aspiring to advance in their careers.”

Katie Jones, 23 from Burscough, in the UK, was crowned Screwfix Trade Apprentice in 2023. An apprentice gas engineer studying at Southport College, Katie impressed the judges with her passion, dedication, and ambition to become an ambassador to inspire more females to enter the industry.

Jack Wallace, Marketing Director at Screwfix, said; “We are thrilled to be championing apprentices in Ireland again with our Trade Apprentice competition this year. We are always blown away with the calibre of talent, passion, and dedication that we see year after year. Screwfix Trade Apprentice goes from strength to strength and the thousands of applications we receive each year are amazing. As ever, I’d encourage the nation’s hard-working and passionate apprentices to apply.”
