As interest in electromobilty continues to rise, the adaptability of emission-free propulsion across the automotive industry, particularly with commercial vehicles is also increasing.

While Ford progressed with the all-electric F-150 Lightening pick-up truck in the USA, the newly developed Ranger Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) version for other markets provides a gateway to full electric, and currently sits alongside the diesel powered models in the family line up across Europe. To those that maybe a bit cautious of the capabilities of petrol electric hybrid technology in a pick-up truck, need not fear, as it’s even better, driving smoother and with more power.
The creation and development of this particular model is appreciated and recognised having been honoured with the International Pick-up Award 2026 by the International Van of the Year jury. As we know petrol-electric technology is not new, but in pick-ups, yes, with some other brands offering the same propulsion system currently, with more to follow.
This advanced Ford Pro hybrid powertrain that can put electric power to use on the road or the worksite, enabling up to 43 km zero tailpipe emission driving and reduced cost of ownership alongside the same towing, load-carrying and off-road capability.
Available as an exclusive Stormtrak launch edition as well as the popular Wildtrak trim and high-specification XLT variants, Ranger PHEV also introduces Pro Power Onboard to the line-up – powering directly from the onboard battery up to 6.9 kW of tools and equipment for work and play.
Fleet Van & Utility took delivery of a brand new sea grey metallic Ranger PHEV, for long term test, that’s produced at Silverton, South Africa.
It will appeal to a broader if not newer audience, which will no doubt add to the Ranger’s success as Europe’s best-selling pickup and elsewhere as it is also a global success story – sold in 180 markets around the world.

What makes it tick? Well, Ranger PHEV’s all-new plug-in hybrid powertrain combines Ford’s 2.3-litre Ford EcoBoost petrol engine and 10-speed automatic gearbox with a 75 kW electric motor (e-motor) and a 11.8 kWh (useable) lithium-ion traction battery. The battery can be charged by plugging into an external power source, as well as by the petrol engine or by capturing energy when in motion.
The battery takes less than four hours to charge to 43 km pure-electric driving, using a single-phase 16 amp charger.
As used in the various driving experiences to date, while on the move, drivers can choose when and how to use battery power with Auto EV, EV Now, EV Later or EV Charge modes.
With upto 697 Nm of torque from the combined e-motor and EcoBoost petrol engine, it boasts the highest of any production Ranger ever – and its peak power of 281 PS is more than a Ranger 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel.
High torque output at low speeds and additional motor-braking from the pickup’s regenerative charging system support effortless acceleration and improved descending control when carrying payloads up to one tonne and when towing up to 3,500 kg.
Near-instant electric torque and the enhanced motor-braking also help optimise off-road capability and make lighter work of demanding conditions like rock crawls and steep inclines.
Ranger PHEV’s e-4WD system can automatically send petrol, electric or hybrid torque to all four wheels to help tackle challenging terrain or suit specific driving situations – supported by a dual-range transfer box and rear differential lock. Drivers can choose between Normal, Eco, Sport, Slippery, Tow/Haul, Mud/Ruts and Sand modes, and Ranger PHEV will adjust the torque distribution to the wheels for the best performance.
The pickup’s rear frame rails have been re-engineered to house the traction battery, that comes with a small indent on the load-bed that’s hardly noticeable. Ford engineers have revised the suspension tuning compared with diesel-powered Rangers, which is noticeable as driving comfort on the road is top class, and assured on- and off-road performance, taking into account Ranger PHEV’s unique chassis and weight distribution.
Ranger PHEV is the first Ranger to offer Ford’s Pro Power Onboard technology, meaning customers who work hard and play hard can leave their generators at home and power high-draw tools and equipment using the traction battery.
Customers can specify a 2.3 kW system that’s ideal for powering weekend trips to the trails with the capacity to comfortably charge multiple e-mountain bikes (650 W) and a portable fridge (65 W) to get the most out of the day.
A 6.9 kW system is designed to meet the demands of heavier-duty equipment. This higher power version features two 15 A outlets in the load box, with 3.45 kW available from each outlet – providing more than enough power to run a small worksite with compact cement mixer (1,500 W), angle grinder (3,000 W) and flood lights (800 W) running simultaneously.
The next-gen Ranger development process involved more than 5,000 interviews with customers and some media (including Fleet Publications) to understand how they use their pickups for work, play and family. Many Ranger customers are dual-use small businesses who put their pickups to work during the week and use them for leisure at weekends. Three highly-specified Ranger PHEV variants are equipped to deliver with no compromise on capability or comfort whatever the assignment.
Every Ranger PHEV features the same five-seat Double Cab format that’s versatile, durable and with a load-bed designed to fit a Euro pallet between the wheel arches. And yes, the integrated step on both sides for easy access to that load bed is included in this model too, a gift!
However, one design or fitting change is that the petrol filler flap remains locked until the button release is pressed, which is positioned to the lower right of the steering wheel. Easy to forget before filling! But necessary for security reasons alone. Would like to see a similar locking mechanism with the electric charge point flap, as it’s easy to press on it and unintentionally open it when loading from the left side of the vehicle.
Inside, there is a continuation of Ford’s SYNC 4A connectivity system with Satellite navigation and a 12-inch vertical touchscreen as standard, as is an 8-inch digital instrument cluster and wireless phone charging. Standard driver assistance technologies include Pre-Collision Assist,Lane Keeping Aid and rear-view camera.
On the Ranger PHEV Wildtrak variants add unique interior and exterior details, heated front seats and steering wheel, and 360-degree Zone Lighting for better all round visibility. While Ranger PHEV Stormtrak launch edition also features unique styling and materials alongside a 10-speaker B&O sound system, Matrix LED headlamps, 2.3 kW Pro Power Onboard and an innovative Flexible Rack System for the load-bed, when fitted.
For many of the current diesel powered Ranger customer base, the petrol electric option maybe more suitable due to their lower mileage usage, and more economical to run etc. Well worth considering as Ford has put an excellent package together with the Ranger PHEV. Jarlath Sweeney
